Within the context of the overall story, whether it’s true or not in the book, having Deckard be a replicant is the only reasonable solution.

But if that is so, why do the human characters in the film refuse to see this? What basic assumptions about what it means to be human prevent them from seeing this? Broadly speaking, there are three ways of thinking about what it means to be human. One way attempts to identify some objective characteristic or set of characteristics that uniquely distinguish human beings from all other living things. Not just any uniquely possessed objective characteristic or set of characteristics will do, however.

Despite the air of academic sophistication with which this view is sometimes advanced, it is worthy of skepticism. Could it really true that children, women, slaves, and foreigners are not human just because the people in a given society at a given time refuse to acknowledge them as 40 Being Human such? Could a social consensus that muskrats are human ever make them so? It is difficult not to conclude that the constructivist approach, in its pure form at least, is in danger of overreacting to the perceived failures of essentialist approaches to the point of spouting patent absurdities.
