In order to test the tradability of different food crops in Tanzania, we estimate monthly retail prices for maize, rice, and cassava as a function of world prices, the exchange rate, regional supply, national supply, and rainfall. As expected, rice prices are strongly influenced by world prices throughout Tanzania, implying that it is tradable. Cassava prices are unaffected by world prices but strongly affected by domestic supply, implying that it is non-tradable. Maize prices are affected by world prices in the more accessible regions and by domestic supply alone in the more isolated regions.

Crop production estimates since 1993 have been largely based on national sample surveys. We concur with the conclusions of Kiregyera et al (1999), Mlay (1999), and Komba (1999) that the food production data used by the National Bureau of Statistics (NBS) in calculating agricultural GDP are seriously flawed and that the data generated by the Agricultural Statistics Unit of the MAC are more accurate. Nonetheless, it should be noted that before 1993 even ASU estimates were based on the subjective reporting of village extension officers, and there is still considerable scope for improvement.

Agricultural production statistics in Tanzania have suffered from inconsistency among the three main sources of data, but they have improved in recent years.
